  • Hey ItsAsIf, welcome back to the wiki! I'm Lostris, this wiki's Wiki Manager. In short, I'm here to support this community on a more local level with any and all issues or fun things you feel could use some attention, as well as serving as your direct line of contact to a full-time staff member in case you ever have a question for them.

Considering you seem to be the resident coding admin, I wanted to bring up the design of this wiki. I will also leave a message for Violet and Winslow to alert them of this thread so they can weigh in.

This wiki is an official Fandom wiki for the show. That basically means that Fandom and Dreamworks struck a partnership. While this comes with definite exposure and reputation perks, it also comes with the minor restriction that some of the larger and more noticeable theme and design changes need to be reviewed to a certain degree. A change to the wiki's background or transparency of the content pages, which effectively turns this wiki into a dark theme, are good examples of such large, noticeable changes that should receive a quick staff review before implementing them. Which does not have to mean that things will be disallowed, it just means that there will be a certain quality check to ensure that the wiki's design remains of the standard agreed upon in the Fandom-Dreamworks partnership.

The transparent page on the dark background has made the blue links nigh illegible. As such, we have two choices:

    1. revert the transparency of the pages to how it was before, making the wiki light themed again
    2. adjust the link color and the templates that still have a light and/or colored background, to make it more in tune with the new feel of the wiki (as the {{AppearancesTS3}} template for example even hurts to look at it).

Just my personal two cents: I would go for #1, since 1. it would omit the need for a major theme overhaul, but more importantly 2. the lighter theme felt more appropriate for the feel of the franchise and is also a bit friendlier on the eyes when reading long pages, clashed less with the bright colors of the images.

Another pressing matter that needs to be attended too as soon as possible is the template background that is broken on the {{HomeWelcome}} and {{HomeLocations}} templates (probably because the image got deleted on the wiki it was hosted on). Considering the wiki's background is already very heavily, visually active, I suggest to just omit any background there altogether and leave it without any additional styling, operate under the "less is more" principle.

I'd love to hear your take on the above so we can quickly sort these problems out and find a good solution. Looking forward to be working with you!

    • Ok. I will change the wiki transparency so the links are easier to read. And for HomeWelcome and Locations, those needed a better background anyway. Thank you!

    • Hey ItsAsIf, great to hear back from you so quickly and thanks for the effort to fix this! I hope you don't mind, but I changed the transparency a little bit more to improve on readability. Reducing the transparency again does cause the pink of your username, which looked nice on the dark theme, to kind of vanish in the gray-blue, so you may want to think about darkening the color.

In regards to the template background, it does look better than the broken background (but no contest there :-p), however, the text still isn't really legible, which isn't what you'd want for a main page. Would you be open to removing the background of those templates altogether? I don't think they're really needed anyway, as the background on itself already provides ample visual stimulus. I think the code that makes the light blue appear could also use some tweaking, as the rounded corners cut inside the text/image when it activates, which, needless to say, also doesn't really look good. If you do feel like those templates need some kind of background, I think that it would fit better with the overall theme of the wiki to make the light blue the default background and change its shape to a rectangle, so the borders of the text are respected if you know what I mean. What do you think?

    • I will change the hover code so that it stays the same background and without a border radius. Thank you!

    • Nice work, it already looks a lot better!

I'm personally still not entirely convinced about the chosen background though; I kind of get distracted by it, and the white letters are sort of being eaten up by the clouds at the bottom ^^". Would you mind trying out a version without any background? For at least that welcome template? I think the combination of the busy wiki background with the cloud background and the small caps message is just creating this overwhelming experience, if you get what I mean. I think the welcome template should really focus more on the written word, get the wiki's introduction out there. I think in this case the "less is more" approach would really work, so no background and no all caps, much like how Mandy's original design was. What do you think? If you don't agree, I'd love to hear your take on it.

    • sure!

    • Sorry to keep bugging you about this, but changing the text color to green just moved the problem of the text being bare readable to the top. Would you mind if I changed some things on the template?

        Loading editor
    • I made the css for the template's text red, i think it should be legible now. and you can tweak the template! im open to any ideas you might have. and i like the background because it gives contrast, but im not sure this specific image is good for the template's background, so im looking for something that represents the tales of arcadia and has the right image size

        Loading editor
    • The red does indeed make it legible, but pardon me for saying this, it doesn't look good as it clashes completely with the rest of the wiki's design, which is all about hues of blue. Would you mind if I made some tweaks?

        Loading editor
    • Sure! plz keep the font size and family the same though if possible

        Loading editor
    • How's that? The light blue is more subtle than what was there before but you still have the contrast you wanted.

I kept the font, but I don't really like that it only comes in caps. Seems unnecessary big and unpleasant to read. Could you be persuaded to move away from it? At least for the HomeWelcome template? Then the HomeLocations will have the caps and background but the welcome one will be more sleek-looking.

After some digging around, and per my initial message about the minor restrictions that come with being an official wiki, I was informed that it may be that DreamWorks will not go for the background and caps, since that's not the layout they signed off on.

    • The tales of arcadia font actually doesnt have lowercase however

        Loading editor
    • Or maybe we could use that font for the headings and for HomeLocations, and for the body it could be the normal font

        Loading editor
    • Yes, I noticed, which is why I'd actually just like to use normal text like in the initial design :-)

        Loading editor
    • is it ok if we use cinzel tho? just for the templates? because it gives a better sense of the wiki and a lot of wikis use the logo's font for the welcome page. but just for headers, not the body

        Loading editor
    • It's definitely okay to use it for the headings, I would have even suggested that if that hadn't already been the case :-) it's just that it is less ideal for the body of the text.

        Loading editor
    • Yea. Well maybe if we take the font family part out of the css and then just put it in the template itself and put a different font for headings and the body, it would look better.

Also, how does this wiki manager thing work? do you have to be an official wiki or just any wiki?

        Loading editor
    • We don't need to change the headings, just replacing the lakehouse class with the mainpage-box-welcome class will do it; the caps will be removed from the body but the headings will remain in the specific font.

        Loading editor
    • yeah lets do that. also, about the wiki manager thing. do we have to have  a specific number of pages? ive been using fandom since 2016 and a lot has changed in these 4 years. ive seen that this wiki manager program is new but not all wikis have them. do we apply for one at zendesk?

        Loading editor
    • Oh yes, sorry, forgot to answer the second part, apologies. As you may have read here, the Wiki Manager program is a year old and came from Gamepedia to help communities thrive. Official wikis will always have a WM assigned but it other wikis have a manager appointed as well. High-traffic communities are good candidates to have a manager appointed, but there are likely other requirements at play as well. If you're interested in having a WM appointed to a certain wiki, it's best to contact that vertical's team lead and request one.
