Magic is ability to control or influence the natural world (including events, objects, people, and physical phenomena) through mystical, paranormal or supernatural means. Apparently, spells can be performed by anyone (e.g., trolls, changelings, and humans) by use of magical items while saying particular incantations. However, wizards have greater knowledge and power over the use of magic.

Becoming a wizard involves a great deal of practice and training. Even those gifted with seemingly inherent magical abilities (Morgana, for example) can take several years to perfect their powers. According to Merlin, mastery over magic is mastery over life.[1]

Known Spells[]

NOTE: There are many spells used and heard, but due to the subtitles regarding most of the incantations as "chanting," a lot of their incantations are unknown. The confirmed spells and their incantations are listed below.

  • Mark of Angor Rot Spell: A spell that allows Angor to steal the Sword of Daylight from Trollhunters.
    • Incantation: Boorah Nazurah Char Sha
    • Requirement: Shadow Staff
    • Used by: Angor Rot
    • Purpose(s):
      • Angor used this spell to take control of the Sword of Daylight from Jim and use it against him, and it is implied the spell would have allowed Angor to take Jim's soul after killing him.
  • Amulet Creation Spell: A spell that is used to lock together the Trollhunter's amulet.
    • Incantation: Ad lucem gloria mea
    • Requirements: Two master wizards, Trollhunter amulet
    • Used by: Merlin, Douxie
    • Purpose(s):
      • Merlin attempts to use this spell multiple times on his own, with little results.
      • Merlin later recruits Douxie after giving him his staff, and with his help succeeds in finishing the amulet.
  • Knowledge Absorption Spell: A spell that allows anyone under the effects of the Elix-Lore to consume more knowledge from multiple books.
    • Incantation: Bula nok chura azu zoth[2]
    • Requirement: Elix-Lore
    • Used by: Toby Domzalski
    • Purpose(s):
      • Toby drank the Elix-Lore potion in hopes of accelerating his and Jim's search for a method in stealing the Inferna Copula from Strickler, but under its effects, Toby became addicted and chanted this spell repeatedly to consume every book in the library.
  • Bind Severing Spell: A Gumm-Gumm spell that severs the binding spell intertwining two individuals' fates together.
    • Incantation: Esh nock tone nockgish nock tooloc
    • Requirement: Orange gemstone, Heartstone
    • Used by: Vendel
    • Purpose(s):
      • Vendel uses this spell from a page of the Book of Ga-Huel to save Barbara's life when Strickler is nicked by Angor's poisoned knife.
  • Shadow Portal Suction Spell: A spell that creates a portal to the Shadow Realm that causes everything in its vicinity to be sucked into it.
    • Incantation: Drooma katorth-a myntarth-a klar
    • Requirements: Shadow Staff
    • Used by: Morgana
    • Purposes(s):
      • Morgana cast this spell in an attempt to trap Jim in the Shadow Realm, but was knocked unconscious by NotEnrique.
  • Magic Neutralizing Spell: A spell to briefly neutralize someone's magic when in use.
    • Incantation: Dim dock, Sa-tu lark
    • Requirements: Glowing animal-like skull artifact
    • Used by: Stricklander
    • Purpose(s):
      • Strickler cast this spell to briefly cancel out Morgana's levitation magic on herself, Toby, and various objects in Claire's room.
  • Shadow Realm Finding Spell: A spell to locate a lost spirit trapped within the Shadow Realm.
    • Incantation: Modus Occul-Takh
    • Requirements: Emotional anchor (of the lost spirit)
    • Used by: Jim Lake Jr.
    • Purpose(s):
      • Jim used this spell on Suzy Snooze to find Claire's lost spirit trapped in the Shadow Realm.
  • Shadow Realm Fleeing Spell: A spell to guide the person's spirit out of the Shadow Realm and to a portal.
    • Incantation: Hkat-Lucco Sudom (Modus Occul-Takh backwards)
    • Requirements: Emotional anchor (of the lost spirit)
    • Used by: Jim Lake Jr. (failed)
    • Purpose(s):
      • Jim attempted to use this spell on Suzy Snooze after finding Claire's spirit, but he forgot how to pronounce it correctly.
  • Shadow Staff Controlling Spell: A spell to control/reclaim the Shadow Staff.
    • Incantation: Azazazuth-Kinekh-Thoon
    • Requirements: None
    • Used by: Morgana (formerly), Claire Nuñez
    • Purpose(s):
      • Morgana casted this spell to force Strickler to release the Shadow Staff and trap Jim Lake Jr., Claire Nuñez and Toby Domzalski. She then uses it to control the staff within the Shadow Realm, making it move fast enough for it to be nigh impossible to catch. She can even feel if anyone makes contact with it.
      • In an effort to expel Morgana out of her body and reclaim her weapon, Claire acquires this spell to regain the Shadow Staff and sever its connection with the witch, making it her own. She later used this to reclaim her staff to use its portals and break herself free from Morgana's restraints.
  • Eternal Night Cancellation Spell: A spell that ends the Eternal Night.
    • Incantation: Boorah Azuth
    • Requirements: Staff of Avalon
    • Used by: Merlin
    • Purpose(s):
      • Merlin used this spell to stop the Eternal Night from progressing any further and to undo its effects.
  • Attack Spell: A spell that unleashes a strong magic blast in various forms.
    • Incantation: Tenebris exilium
    • Requirements: A staff
    • Used by: Merlin/Douxie
    • Purposes(s):
      • Merlin and Douxie cast this spell to attack.
  • Sleep Spell: A spell that puts someone to sleep. According to Archie, overuse of this spell could cause permanent memory loss.
    • Incantation: Interminus nocti sluumberso
    • Requirements: Nothing
    • Used by: Douxie
    • Purposes(s):
      • Douxie cast this spell to put his past self to sleep and take his place. He uses it on his past self again to join the troll hunt.
  • Darkness Shading Spell: A shadow spell that covers anything in darkness.
    • Incantation: Aurai capernus umbra
    • Requirements: Shadow Staff
    • Used by: Morgana
    • Purpose(s):
      • Morgana casted this spell on the portrait of herself and Arthur to express her frustration of her brother's paranoia and prejudice against those involved with magic.
  • Shadow Rising Spell: A shadow spell that brings shadows to life as tangible entities.
    • Incantation: Ortum obumbratio
    • Requirements: Shadow Staff
    • Used by: Morgana
    • Purposes(s):
      • Morgana cast this spell to fight Arthur, Merlin, Douxie, Claire, and Steve simultaneously. Without speaking, she later uses it to conjure a similar shadow-Morgana to fight Merlin, Douxie, and Archie while personally attacking Arthur during the Battle of Kilahead Bridge.
  • Tremor Spell: A spell that causes tremors.
    • Incantation: Causa crepitoose
    • Requirements: None
    • Used by: Douxie
    • Purpose(s):
      • Douxie attempted to use this spell on Lock and Latch to follow Merlin to the Lady of the Lake, but no avail. He later used it to fight the Arcane Order in Rise of the Titans.
  • Barrier Breaking Spell: A spell that wards off barrier spells.
    • Incantation: Teneris Exilium
    • Requirements: None
    • Used by: Douxie
    • Purpose(s):
      • Douxie uses this spell to free Nimue from her lake prison, courtesy of Merlin.
  • Wave Spell: A spell that creates a wave of powerful magic, capable of knocking surrounding foes away.
    • Incantation: Elemen-zath
    • Requirements: None
    • Used by: Morgana
    • Purpose(s):
      • Morgana used this spell when she appears at the Battle of Killahead Bridge to blast several knights away. She may have used it at other times in the show as well.
  • Subduing/Sealing Spell: A spell that seals away a target, even a powerful wizard.
    • Incantation: Sigilia infractum causera
    • Requirements: A staff
    • Used by: Merlin/Douxie
    • Purposes(s):
      • Merlin attempted to cast this spell to imprison Morgana, until she broke free from Douxie's grip. Douxie later casts this spell to finish the job.
  • Projectile Spell: A spell that releases a small series of energy beams and objects.
    • Incantation: Magna twana truess
    • Requirements: Nothing
    • Used by: Douxie
    • Purpose(s):
      • Douxie used this spell in an attempt to strike the Green Knight, though was unsuccessful.
  • Smokescreen Spell: A spell that conjures a smokescreen.
    • Incantation: Gassus flotulus

      • Douxie cast this spell in the past while trying to escape from Camelot's knights.
  • Shadow Realm Liberation Spell: A ritual that frees/resurrects someone trapped in the Shadow Realm.
    • Incantation: Tata om bekanze maha randza! Thou who sleeps but yearns to slay, heed the call, rise up, obey! Travel through the shadow door, assemble flesh, and walk once more!
    • Requirements: The vary essence of the person intended to be resurrected
    • Used by: Bellroc and Skrael
    • Purpose(s):
    • [Notes: The first part of the incantation (Tata om bakanze maha randza) is later chanted by Bellroc just before the fire titan would have reset the Earth.]
  • Banishing Darkness Spell: A spell that unleashes a power burst of magic to ward off dark magic users.

      • Douxie uses this against Bellroc and Skrael in their duel.
  • Weapon Releasing Spell: A shadow spell that breaks the bond between a person and a magical weapon.

    • Purposes(s):
      • Morgana cast this spell to free Excalibur from the corrupted King Arthur after realizing that his worth to wield it is long gone.
  • Adhesion Spell: A spell that makes the targets's hands and feet adhere to any surface.

    • Requirements: A staff.
    • Used by: Douxie
    • Purposes(s):
      • Douxie uses it to make himself and his allies to adhere to Bellroc's titan.
  • Body Switching Spell: A spell that lets the user switch bodies with another person.

    • Used by: Douxie

      • Douxie casted this spell to switch bodies with Nari so Belloc and Skrael would take him instead.
