Shadow Portals are emitted by the Shadow Staff when used. It is first seen in "Mudslinging" after a visibly distraught Angor Rot enters a portal after Jim defeats the golem he conjured. Using these portals allows for instant entry into another place through the Shadow Realm.
Description[]
Usually, portals appear to be a concentrated black mist roughly in the shape of a tall oval. After being used, it quickly fades away from sight.
In the episode "In the Hall of the Gumm-Gumm King", Claire unleashes an ultimate portal in Trollmarket in order to safely evacuate herself along with Jim, Toby, and numerous trolls from Gunmar's invasion. The staff emits a burst of purple light, accompanied by a swirling storm of purple electricity and smoke surrounding the staff.

Abilities[]
Portals created by the Shadow Staff allows for instant transportation to any place by sending the user into the Shadow Realm, a dark void that serves as a bridge between worlds. The portals can also transport more than one person at a time, however, the more people there are, the more power is needed to stabilize the portal.
Limitations[]
Shadow portals are created as a result of strong negative emotion, which powers the staff.
If the user does not know where their destination is, they need to have an emotional anchor present at the location. Otherwise, they are not able to travel there using the portal.
Excessive usage of these portals can cause exhaustion, and even corruption as seen by Claire when she is possessed by Morgana.
Normal portals can only transport a few people at a time. To transport more people, a larger portal is needed which requires more energy and could place the portal creator at risk being corrupted.

- Claire's first portal was made in "Airheads", although she first obtained the staff in the episode prior, "The Shattered King".
- According to Steve in "Lady of the Lake", stepping into the shadow portals feels "weird like cold pudding".
