- “The Nyarlagroths were challenging because they had to be really creepy and scary but not in an overwhelming way. I referenced a lot of microscopic animals for ideas on the face, slightly alien-like, yet somewhat grounded and believable to the story.”

Nyarlagroths (alternatively spelled Nyalagroths) are large creatures that inhabited the Darklands.
Nyarlagroths are aggressive creatures with little reasoning that attack anyone who approaches them or their nests. They build their nests in the caves of the Darklands, usually covering them with rocks.
Nyarlagroths are huge, black, serpent-like creatures with a pair of large horns on each side of their heads, a series of thick scales covering their backs and a large mouth covered with crooked teeth. They do not have eyes so they are blind and depend on their tongues to perceive their surroundings, similar to a snake and lizard.
Powers & Abilities
Their tongues can also be used as weapons, crossing things with great speed. They are also fire-proof (inside and out).
Strong essences, such as those of the Cimmerian fruit, can disorient them, due to their highly sensitive sense of smell.
