Hey Winslow, we talked briefly on the other wiki, but I wanted to check in with you on this wiki as well, see if there is anything on your mind with which you could use some help. I'm so excited that they finally settled on a release date for Wizards, can't wait! Also, check out the spike this wiki saw in viewership by just having the date be announced! Just imagine what the actual release of the series will do.
Additionally, I wanted to ask you if you know who the owner of the wiki's Discord server is? While this community is sporting the Discord widget, it's set up wrong, so no one can actually join, which is something that I'd like to remedy before the release of Wizards, so the community has a place to hang and discuss the series.
Hey Winslow (or Master Ellis, whichever you prefer)! I'm Lostris, and I'll be the Wiki Manager for Arcadia Oaks-pedia. Like Mandy before me, you may always contact me if you have any questions about this community, which can range from a question to a full-time staff member, which I will relay for you, to editing, design, social problems, etc. Or even if you just have a cool idea for this community that you feel could use a little more Fandom love, don't hesitate to reach out to me, either by messaging me on my wall or on Discord if you prefer that medium.
As I told Violet as well, this wiki already looks amazing, so very well done! As a fan of the franchise, I was very happy to be assigned to be this community's Wiki Manager, and I look forward to start working with you. I can't wait for a release date for Wizards so I can start binging that one as well!
Hey you both! Yes, sorry about removing that section from this message, but I initially wanted to tell you the same thing, but then just as I posted it, I noticed that Violet already removed it, so it seemed pointless to have another big paragraph for you to read that was already outdated. (RIP = Rest In Peace, in reference indeed to the list of deceased characters).
Now that I have you both here, I have a few other suggestions I'd like to run by you. Mind you, these are suggestions based on best practices, but in no way am I forcing you to do anything. The decision remains yours of course. I apologise beforehand for the seemingly daunting length of this post. It really are not that many suggestions, but I included a rather lengthy explanation as to why such a change may benefit you. If anything is unclear, I am more than happy to explain it to you.
On the main page
Remove footer at the bottom
The main page best practice blog touches on this in the "navigating your wiki" section. Basically, there is little point in having links to other communities that have no relevance to your own wikis subject. (And from a personal design point of view, they generally don't look good/don't fit with the overall design of the main page.)
Re-add Tales of Arcadia Twitter feed
I noticed that it used to be there but was later removed. I am just proposing this as it generally provides a quick overview of the latest ToA news, that you can they easily (and generally more thoroughly) cover on the wiki
Move the Tour Around Arcadia
This is such a lovely section that connect your current content and provides some quick links to some high-traffic pages. However, it seems a bit squished together in the right rail, and I feel like it may better come to its full right when put on the actual page (where there is now more room due to the removal of the RIP section).
All the shows are currently grouped under the "shows" header. I would suggest to give each tale its own section in the navbar. There is room enough and would greatly improve the visibility of the links. It would also allow you to add additional links since the navbar allows for 3 levels. Currently, the first one is "Shows", which allows you to add 7 links on the second level, of which now only three are use to (logically) link to each separate show. Each second level link allows for the addition of 10 third level links (which you currently use to link to the general categories of that show).
Now, if you would remove "shows" as a first level and give Trollhunters, 3 Below, and Wizards each their own first level link, you open up your third level to link to specific main characters or provide easy links to some key objects such as Jim's amulet and Claire's shadow staff.
Apologies, tl;dr: it would be beneficial for easy navigation.
Removal of Template:Canon
This template is put atop nearly every page on the wiki. Personally, I think it may make more sense to switch things around: I think everyone assumes that all content they read on a wiki, especially an official one like this, is valid, properly sourced, and considered canon. As such, such a template seems to be stating the obvious. I would switch the use of said template around to make one "Not canon" and only use it when a page is considered to not be part of the ToA universe. Besides being a benefit for your page's aesthetic, it will also benefit the wiki's SEO value (the ease with which search engines will find and recommend this wiki). So basically you could say that Google doesn't really love the use of such permanent notice templates.
I these suggestions or some of them seems agreeable to you, I am more than happy to provide any assistance you may need to implement a change (like, if you would want to remove the canon template, that can easily be done with a bot account.)
So again, apologies for the lengthy post, but these are just some minor things that I think could really help this community. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it (and as said at the beginning, I am in no way forcing you to do anything, so if you don't like something, don't hesitate to say so. I'm here to work with you to make things better, not to tell you what to do and force changes you don't like.)
Which is why I propose to remove it. Since it's so overly used, the notice sort of loses its value. People probably don't read it anymore, and if they do, as said, the assumption is that everything is canon anyway, so it is stating the obvious.
So yes, I would remove it on all pages, and if there are pages where the notice was not present because it contains information that is not considered canon, I would add a new template saying the exact opposite of the current template: "The following information has not appeared or been validated by official sources. Therefor it is not considered to be part of the main continuity."
Yes. As you can see here, there are over 250 uses of that template on this wiki. I can use a bot to pull up that list and automatically remove it on every single page. The bot would also be flagged, which means that its edits do not show up on the recent changes page, so it does not hinder other editors.
I am referring to the option you get when you edit a page. When you edit a page, there are different icons: a photo icon, a video icon, and a gallery icon. The gallery icon suddenly vanished after a while. It’s been happening on a lot of wikis.
In regards to the navbar adjustment I mentioned earlier, I was talking about making a change like this. I just made a mockup for the Trollhunters section to give you an idea of what I was talking about.
If you wish to see an extended preview, you can paste the following coding in the navbar and use the preview option:
That's great! It should really benefit your readers navigating the site. And speaking as an editor, such easy links often help us as well :-)
If you wish, I could help build on the navigation for the other two shows like I did for Trollhunters. Could save you some time. If you wish to do it yourself, however, I can totally understand. You know this wiki best after all.
I noticed that there are some strangled pages that still have 3Below written with the space. If it is okay with you, I would like to run the bot again to fix that naming issue. Eg. The 3 Below character category and episode pages.
All the 3Below categories (characters, episodes, objects, and weapons) are still written as 3 Below as opposed to 3Below. I would like to help fix that by renaming the categories and running the bot to adjust the categories on all the pages.
Great! I hope you don't mind that, I just finished changing the remaining categories, so they should normally all be in order now.
For future references though, if you ever need to make many repetitive edits to this wiki like removing the canon template, you may always ask for the bot to take care of it. As said, I'm here to make your Fandom experience easier.
Yes. It's a total bummer, but a month delay is better than waiting until Christmas. Even the workers at Animation studio need to look out for their health, let alone the voice actors. They said that they're almost done, but they're still working on about two or three more episodes until post-production.
Bummer indeed about having to push the release, though on the other hand, great birthday present for you! It would be a lot better than what I got for my birthday: a celebration in quarantine, which hopefully you will not have to experience.
I can make any changes to the navbar that you like, but as an administrator, you can also just do so yourself if you want. I just added some suggestions there to help users navigate the great resource you all created, by no means are you not allowed to change that.
Ahh, that would be nice! On the other hand, then we still would have to wait several weeks for the rest. I wouldn't mind just getting some teaser videos and official art instead to then being able to binge the first part entirely.
Myeah, we'll have to await some official release to have a decent preview, but considering the nature of the franchise, not making it into some 3D adventure seems like a missed opportunity. But still hopeful it will have an interesting gameplay and storyline though!
If you do decide to include the gameplay on the wiki (I personally think it may be a good idea, since it will increase this wiki's reputation as being the source for all this Arcadia, and since it is the official wiki for the franchise, it is nice to have this included as well), I could give you some best practices tips that we received from the gaming vertical about including games on TV-focused wiki.
Nice touch to include Porgon! Seems like the game, while I am personally also not a fan of the side-view, will hold canon storylines, which I definitely think are worthy to be covered on the wiki. Now we will finally know why Porgon was being chased!
Would it be okay if I created a page for the game to cover what is known thus far?
Hey, remember the user who's been translating the pages into Spanish a while back? I think he's back with a new username, Pablo Cortijo Giménez. I just want to give you a heads up in case he's gonna try and do it again.
Hi, I'm Spottedstar from the Kung Fu Panda Wiki. I'm also the original creator of the DreamWorks footer that's featured at the bottom of every DreamWorks-related wiki.
I occasionally check up on the footer to check recent changes made to it and make sure all the links still work, and from that I noticed this wiki's main page was missing the template. I looked at the page's history and saw from this edit that a lot of stuff was removed including the template, I'd guess possibly from redesigning or something.
Are there any plans to add those missing footers back in? If not, just for navigational consistency of the template, I'm requesting the DreamWorks footer at least be added back in. Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!
Okay I see your edit, but it's definitely in the wrong spot. You also copy-pasted the entire code rather than using the shorter template code for it, which will also make sure it stays up-to-date whenever a change is made to it.
Place this code after <mainpage-endcolumn />:
That'll pull it straight from the template page, keep it up to date, and putting it after the endcolumn tag will stretch it evenly across the whole page rather than one column.
I need to ask for your opinion here, because its been bothering me all day.
Does EVERY image HAVE to be full sized? Is it REALLY a crime to just crop an appropriate image? I mean, ItsAsIf is running around throwing away every cropped image. I had to reapply the images because of him. I tried to argue with him, he keeps insisting that images have to be FULL SIZED. I seriously don't see the crime here. This wiki has been offical for like a whole year and nobody complained about the cropped images until now.
I'm not asking you to argue with him, I'm just wondering if it's really wrong to crop images for this wiki, making them more focused and open to see what the pages are really about?
And I get it. I just don't get how cropping is so wrong and unprofessional. I mean, we've all done for months, before and after the wiki became official. But we really do it to show like the actual thing the page is talking about. Like the Gaylen's Core page. It shows a clear image of what the page is talking about, making it more open. You know what I mean?
