This article is about Core Timeline Draal. You may be looking for Draal the Deadly (Alternative Reality).

Your battles won't always be waged in arenas. You won't have time to prepare, to study your opponent for weaknesses as you did me. You are the Trollhunter. It is time to start being afraid. Since I cannot go back to Trollmarket, I will guard your home.
―Draal to Jim before becoming his bodyguard[src]

And your mother Babura

Draal the Deadly was a major character of Trollhunters and a minor character of Wizards.

He was the mentor/guardian of Jim Lake Jr., the son of Kanjigar the Courageous and Ballustra, and the grandson of Tarigar.

Official Biography[]

"A particularly large and vicious Troll, Draal initially resents our hero Jim, believing the sacred mantle of Trollhunter should have been passed to him over a mere human. More than a vengeful brute, Draal wants what's best for his kin, but his pride prevents him from acknowledging Jim's true potential."

History[]

Backstory[]

Draal and his father, Kanjigar used to fight side-by-side in battles with the Gumm-Gumms. They fought side-by-side during the Battle of Killahead Bridge, where the evil Gumm-Gumm army was banished to the Darklands.

Centuries later, a deal called "The Pact" was made between the trolls and the humans, which allowed both of their kinds to live together in harmony. However, since the trolls had spent their whole lives fighting the Gumm-Gumms, they longed for battles and felt that the truce made them look weak and that humans looked down upon them. The trolls also limited their diets to cats and used articles of clothing. Deciding to move to a new location, Vendel sensed a new Heartstone in a place called, "The New World." They boarded a ship called, "The Mayflower" that was heading towards the New World, bringing along some gnomes for grooming and occasional nourishment. As soon as they snuck onboard, Bular arrived and attacked Deya right before sunrise. As soon as the sun rose, Deya fell into the ocean and was turned to stone by the dreaded sunlight, sinking her down to the river.

During the ride to the New World, the Amulet came onto the ship to choose the new Trollhunter. At first, Blinky thought he was going to be the Trollhunter, but it turned out to be none other than his friend, Kanjigar. On the journey, the trolls grew desperate with hunger and started eating stuff contained in the barrels and the cats boarding it.

Months later, Kanjigar and Draal discussed Kanjigar's new job as the Trollhunter. Since he trained Unkar the Unfortunate, Blinky offered to be Kanjigar's new trainer, but Kanjigar didn't want to listen. Suddenly, Kanjigar saw Plymouth Rock, confirming that they had finally reached the New World. The trolls sneaked off of the ship and headed off to a place called "New Jersey." Over the years, they traveled through the land with help from various human cultures. They even got aided by Lewis and Clark at one point. Unfortunately, the trolls started growing weak from being away from a Hearthstone for so long. Oftentimes, they had to sleep in caves between their travels, which caused delays and frustration.

One night on a Native American tribal camp, some mountain trolls invaded and Kanjigar was sent to take care of the problem. After Kanjigar defeated them, Blinky tried to offer advice, but Kanjigar still didn't want to hear it. Ultimately, Kanjigar decided to abandon the settlement because of the humans overthrowing the camp. Just then, some trolls found AAARRRGGHH!!!, a former member of Gunmar's army, behind a geyser and brought him to Kanjigar. AAARRRGGHH!!! revealed that he had been following them to the New World since he missed the boat, but made a few wrong turns along the way. Blinky suggested executing AAARRRGGHH!!! because he worked for Gunmar and might be a spy. AAARRRGGHH!!! then showed the trolls the remains of Deya. At first, the other trolls thought AAARRRGGHH!!! destroyed Deya, but Kanjigar convinced them otherwise when he reminded them about AAARRRGGHH!!!'s kind act towards him. Vendel allowed AAARRRGGHH!!! into their tribe, much to Blinky's dismay. Blinky tried to tell Kanjigar that it was a bad idea to let AAARRRGGHH!!! into the group, but Kanjigar assured him that change is a part of life and that AAARRRGGHH!!!'s good deeds taught him that lesson.

The trolls headed to the Rocky Mountains, where they got caught in a dangerous avalanche caused by the guardian, Craggen, who won't let them pass. Kanjigar tried to reason, but Craggen and his brothers wouldn't listen, so they challenged the trolls to a duel for the next day. During the meeting, everyone wanted to give up and leave the mountains, but Kanjigar gave them a speech about destiny and not to give up on their brotherhood.

The very next day, Kanjigar, Draal, and AAARRRGGHH!!! arrive back to Craggen and his brothers to battle them. Despite their strength and abilities, the mountain trolls managed to outsmart them.

Back at camp, Blinky starts thinking about what Kanjigar said earlier, and realized what Kanjigar's speech meant and decided to go help them fight the mountain trolls, which persuaded the others to join along. Just when AAARRRGGHH!!! was about to be crushed by one of Craggen's brothers, Blinky jumped in with his fire sword and rescued him, now truly believing AAARRRGGHH!!! to be reformed. The trolls all worked together to battle Craggen and his brothers, which resulted in an upper advantage, and the loss of a few soldiers. Ultimately, Kanjigar managed to defeat Craggen by "kicking him in the gronk-nuks." Thus, a legendary Trollhunter was born, and there was much rejoicing that night. AAARRRGGHH!!! also renounced his violent ways and became a pacifist during the celebration.

Months later, the trolls had arrived in California and finally found their new home. As they went underground and built their new kingdom, the young Heartstone helped the trolls regain their energy and power. They were inspired by Deya's stoned body to use the statues/remains of the past hunters as a tribute to their great history, and Blinky was made as Kanjigar's new trainer. Since then, Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!! helped Kanjigar protect Trollmarket from danger and threats to expose their world to the mortals.

One day, Gunmar's son, Bular, invaded Arcadia and was set out destroy Kanjigar. When Kanjigar went out on night patrol, Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! stayed in the library to wait for him to return home. When Kanjigar didn't come back, Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! became deeply worried and set out when the sun started to rise. They went under the bridge where Kanjigar was battling Bular and found Kanjigar's remains turned to stone, leaving the two deeply devastated and stunned in silence. They went back into the drain pipe to keep out of the sunlight. When Blinky started to feel sorry for himself, the two saw Jim and Toby riding on their bikes and were shocked to find that the amulet chose Jim as the new Trollhunter.

They went back to the library to read the Trollmarket recap book to make sure there were previous human Trollhunters, but to their shock, it turns out that Jim really is the first human Trollhunter. When Draal arrived, Blinky informed him of Kanjigar's demise. However, Draal figured that he was the next Trollhunter, due to being Kanjigar's son. Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! did not have the heart to tell him he wasn't.

It is also hinted that Draal has some romantic relationship with the Changeling Nomura, but it seemed that it had broken off once he discovered she was working for the Janus Order.

Trollhunters (Part One)[]

A Human Trollhunter?[]

When Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! bring Jim and Toby to Trollmarket for the first time, Draal comes up and demands to know who this "flesh-bag" is. Blinky replies that Jim is their new protector, much to Draal's disappointment and shock, since he wanted to be the new Trollhunter. To prove that Jim isn't worthy of the title, he challenges Jim to a fight to the death, and whoever wins, gets to be the new hunter.

During the next couple of days, Draal starts training and feeling confident about himself winning, especially since Jim knows nothing about how to properly wield the sword and has been somewhat slacking off on his Trollhunting studies.

The Fight Begins[]

When the day of the battle begins, Draal is totally confident in himself. They begin to battle and Draal has the upper-hand with his roly-poly ability. Eventually, Jim does begin to overpower Draal and drive him to the edge of a cliff. Despite everyone's insistence, Jim does not let Draal drop off the cliff and saves him, which leads to the troll being shunned by all of the other trolls.

In spite of his humiliation and losing his dignity, Draal feels grateful towards the Trollhunter and goes to Earth to save him from Nomura, who is trying to steal the amulet. Draal informs Jim that he is moving in with him to help him train for upcoming battles, due to his experience in combat.

Training Jim[]

Draal begins training Jim, but he is feeling a little blue. When Draal asks why Jim replies it's because he isn't feeling confident enough to talk to Claire. To help, Draal gives Jim a special totem necklace that will make him more confident than ever. Unfortunately, it also makes him arrogant, rude, and disrespectful towards his friends and teachers, not to mention, put him in danger when he decides to fight Bular himself.

Strickler Comes to Dinner[]

When Strickler decides to come to dinner to confront Jim, the Trollhunter (having found out about Strickler's true colors) tells Draal his plan to keep Strickler busy while Toby, Blinky and AAARRRGGH!!! search his office for information on the Killahead Bridge. Draal immediately disapproved of his plan because it was devoid of killing the Changeling. Jim insisted on waiting on it until they find the Bridge and figure out Strickler's intentions. Though Draal suggested torturing Strickler, Jim forbade him from performing any violence in front of his mother unless it was a last resort. Thus, he instructed Draal that he would tap once if he was fine and twice if he needed help.

While dinner occurs, Draal finds Claire eavesdropping in the basement. When she sneezes, Draal says "gesundheit", which causes Claire to see him and faint. He then picks her up and takes her outside for safety before she wakes up.

The Second Battle of Killahead[]

When Jim goes to the museum to rescue Blinky, who has been captured by Bular and his minions, Toby, AAARRRGGHH!!!, and Draal decide to follow him to assist. At the cost of his right arm, Draal manages to defeat Bular and stop the bridge from being opened. He is welcomed back into Trollmarket with open arms for his accomplishment and receives a mechanical prosthetic arm to replace his lost one.

The Return of the Trollhunter[]

Draal is seen rebuilding the remains of his father, Kanjigar, so that he can take his place beside the other stone statues of past Trollhunters.

Human Blinky & Training Claire[]

PyroBligst[]

When Queen Usurna and the Kruberas come to take AAARRRGGHH!!! back to the Deep Caves after learning he was dying from the wound Angor Rot gave him, Vendel proposes a game of PyroBligst to decide his fate. AAARRRGGHH!!! was suppose to represent Trollmarket with Jim, but overheard the bet Vendel and Usurna made and left. As a result, Draal fills in for him. During halftime, Vendel inform the group what was at stake and they begin to play for AAARRRGGHH!!!, eventually evening the score.

Troll Assassin[]

Trollhunters (Part Two)[]

Rescues Jim from the Darklands[]

Draal vs Gunmar[]

After Vendel reveals that Queen Usurna has heard of Blood Goblin and Gruesome sightings in Arcadia, he reveals she was preparing a trial for Jim. While Blinky and AAARRRGGHH!!! goes to find out who told Usurna, Draal returns to the forest to look for any traces of Gunmar. While in the woods, he finds a footprints and hears a woman screaming. he then finds a vehicle in a tree and a woman's purse on the ground. At that moment Gunmar appears behind him and the two trolls fight. Gunmar soon gains the upper hand and Draal tells him he was Jim's protector. Upon hearing this, Gunmar uses his Decimaar Blade to brainwash Draal.

Jim is ready to confess once released from his Saturday detention. They are surprised to see Draal in the hallway. He charges at them and they realize he's been hit by the Decimaar Blade, meaning Gunmar is out of the Darklands. Jim tries to reach and get Draal to fight possession. Gunmar, through Draal, throws Jim aside, and Jim sees the mole mascot down the hall. Jim says he can't fight his friend. Gunmar tells Jim that his friend is gone. Jim says they will save Draal and defeat Gunmar. He lets Jim go and leave.

Alternate Reality[]

Draal appears in the alternate universe of himself, Where he became the Trollhunter after his father died, which didn't happen in the original story. When Jim goes to the museum to find the amulet, he comes across the corpse of his friend with the sword of Bular planted in his back and the amulet was destroyed.

Gunmar Takes Trollmarket[]

Draal later took part in the invasion of Trollmarket with Gunmar and Dictatious after Usurna revealed her true loyalties. He was ordered by Dictatious to find and bring Blinky to him, and later found Dictatious tied up in the library. Draal later found where Jim was evacuating the trolls from in the Gyre Station. AAARRRGGHH!!! seals the entrance, but the exits are sealed as well. Fortunately, Claire manages to help everyone escape using her Shadow Staff. Draal is last seen standing behind Gunmar and his minions as he is chanted by his army.

Trollhunters (Part Three)[]

Freed from Gunmar[]

Still brainwashed and under Gunmar's control, Draal follows both him and Angor Rot, although even possessed he shows signs of fatigue due to constantly being used by Gunmar as he struggles to climb a cliff (though he had a heavy metal chain to carry around his shoulder). As they arrive at the entrance of Merlin's Cave, Gunmar shoves Draal aside to go first. Only then is the brainwashed troll truly exhausted, unable to immediatly wake up and is seen catching up his breath. As Gunmar reads the message of magic being impossible in the wizard's final resting place, Draal wakes up from his trence, finally freed from the evil Gumm-gumm warlord's possession as he angrily realized that Gunmar had been using him this whole time. Despite being weakened both physically and emotionally from the possession, Draal lunges at Gunmar who easily defeats within seconds. As he is about to deal a fatal blow on the blue troll, claiming the chain they used this whole time was his leash, Angor Rot witnesses the fight, reminding him of Strickler who used the exact same words and also used him as his pawn with the help of the Inferna Copula. He stops Gunmar from further harming Draal, hidind the fact he wants him to live only so he could be useful to them further in the cave. What happens next is unknown as how they all three got further into the cave happened off-screen, but Angor didn't tie up Draal with the chain as Gunmar had ordered him to, likely feeling sympathic enough not to see him suffer any longer. It's also unknown how Draal ended up in the Geodes Cavern but its likely that Gunmar brought him with him and then placed him in a pillar of crystal to distract the Trollhunters while he was going to go look for the Staff of Avalon as the latter was unconscious since Draal was previously beaten up by Gunmar. Before that, he used Draal's mechanical arm to block the defense mechanism that leads to the Geodes Cavern, hoping the Trollhunters wouldn't find him so easily.

Later, and after escaping Angor Rot's never ending revenge towards him, Jim successfully locates Draal and gets him out of the crystals he was stuck in. Draal blames himself for breaking his oath of protecting Jim and getting possessed by Gunmar which lead up to him attacking Jim and the others, helping the evil warlord take over Trollmarket and resurrect Angor Rot. Jim reassures him it wasn't his fault, that Gunmar forced him to do things he never would have done and that he isn't only his protector but also his friend. Moved by the boy's words Draal looks away as Jim hugs him before he can react which suprises him before he himself answers back with a hug. That moment is interrupted by Gunmar's voice, as the Gumm-gumm warlord is heard in the entire cave, yelling his frustration at having not found the staff yet. The two surrogate brothers rush in, climbing down large crystals on their way to the staff. They finally see it and Gunmar who is about to grab it, however right before he can Draal takes Jim on his back, leaps from the crystal they were hanging onto, spins in his curved spiky ball appearence at high speed and takes out Gunmar who only noticed the attack coming seconds too late as the two trolls land on seperate crystals following the impact. Angor Rot then joins the fight, trying to kill Jim yet again as Draal is protecting him from the two evil trolls. As Jim is fighting Angor Rot on the other side of the long and large crsytal that they are all standing on (crystal that was as tall as a tower, standing vertically, now horizontally due to Angor Rot's powerful landing on it), Draal has a horn to horn fight with his archenemy. While throwing a few punches at Draal, which the latter returns, he tells him that he's nothing, to which Draal insists he's Jim protector and that he will never break his oath to keep him safe. After this, Draal manages to send Gunmar flying off the plateform with a punch as the warlord seemingly falls into the chasm below the giant crystal, he then rushes in to save Jim by knocking out Angor Rot with a punch from his mechanical arm. However, more determined than ever to kill the Trollhunter, Angor chases him and tries to stab him with his Creeper Sun Poison dagger before being sent flying down into the abyss as well, by Draal who had reached the top of the plateform and threw a crystal at Angor. Draal then jokingly hurries Jim up to climb the edge without making it weird (using the boy's words against him when he should have previously killed Draal instead of sparing him), as Draal grabs Jim's hand, Jim's eyes widen as he yells for Draal to look out behind him. As Draal turns to see Gunmar standing behind him about to attack, his happy expression turns into one of disbelief as he had previously sent the Gumm-gumm troll falling in the depths of the Geodes Cavern. Gunmar then violently slashes Draal on the chest with his large horns which briefly knocks him out and horrifies Jim who is forced to watch, unable to help his friend. Gunmar then grabs Draal and lifts him above his head as the latter screams in agony which echoes in the entire cave before slamming him on the plateform's ground and lifting up Jim and snatching the staff from his hands. Helpless, tears runs down Jim's cheeks as he yells the name of his troll friend who's desperatly trying to get up despite the brutal wound he's just been inflicted. Gunmar mocks the two and leaves them for dead as the plateform they are standing on is slowly sinking in the depths of the Geodes Cavern. At that moment, Blinky, AAARRRGGHH!!!, Toby and Claire arrives and witness the scene, too far away to intervene yet.

Unfortuneatly, Angor Rot who yet again came back, raises his dagger at Jim, about to murder him, before Draal uses the remaining strength he has and spins into the action, taking the fatal blow that was meant for Jim as his body slowly begins to turn to stone. Jim, shocked, yells out Draal's name as the blue troll uses the last ounce of strength he has to hold Angor Rot off and heads to the edge of the plateform. When Angor Rot questions his action to give up his life for a human, Draal replies with "Because, he's...my friend!", using yet again the same words the Jim had used to describe him earlier. As he reaches the edge, Draal bids farewell to Jim, stating it has been his honor fighting by his side as he leaps off the plateform still holding Angor Rot in his arms. Jim screams Draal's name and takes a final look at his friend before being pulled away from the edge by Toby and Blinky who had managed to make it and get him to safety. Angor Rot manages to free himself from Draal's hold and hangs on the the skining plateform as Draal's body completely turns to stone while he crossed both his arm in a sign of honor, like his father did in his last moments against Gunmar's son, dying with a smile and fading and falling below into the chasm, disappearing.

Wizards[]

Draal makes a brief cameo in Killahead: Part 1 and Part 2, where he deems himself worthy to be the Trollhunter.

Physical Description[]

Draal is actually one our favorite designs. Initially, Guillermo and Rodrigo explored the idea of Steve Palchuk being a Changeling, so we set out to design a tough, butch character. While Steve's character changed, we kept this design for Draal. The design of his horns makes him unique, standing out from the rest.
―The Team at Headless Studio[src]

Draal is a large, muscular troll with blue skin and a set of big horns on his head. He has two yellow eyes and spiky growths on his shoulders, arms, and back. He wears a ring in his nose, a brown leather kilt with a wide black belt, which has a triangular gold buckle, and green and brown leather wrapped on his right wrist. He also has patterns on his shoulders, chest, and chin.

Draal lost his right arm removing the Amulet from the Killahead Bridge, turning it to stone. He later replaced it with a mechanical prosthetic. After being brainwashed by Gunmar's Decimaar Blade, his glow blue with no pupils.

Personality[]

The perceived heir-apparent Trollhunter (for which he has been preparing his whole life), Draal initially resents Jim, a fleshbag. When Jim shows mercy after defeating Draal in a duel, Draal vows to protect him in the human world and act as his bodyguard.
The Art of Trollhunters

Initially, Draal despised Jim for taking his father's role as Trollhunter, having trained his whole life in the hopes of becoming Kanjigar's successor. He scorned Jim as inferior and weak, until he was beaten by Jim in combat.

But after sparing his life, Draal looked upon Jim with new and more humble eyes and chose to protect Jim and even assist in his training. While maintaining his gruff exterior, he comes to respect and even admire Jim, viewing him a worthy Trollhunter in his own way. Jim and Draal relationship reached up to the point that Jim considered Draal as his surrogate brother, and as a result, Jim confided in Draal more than he did to Blinky or and of his other friends. Draal in return had great respect for Jim and vowed to protect him forever, even at the cost of his own life. Draal also has a high regard for honor, as seen when he was broken emotionally after having broken his vow to protect Jim, while under Gunmar's sway.

Draal was proud and boastful but could be kind and helpful at times. But there is always a flippant aura about him, never really letting him seem too serious.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Troll Physiology: Draal had super strength and the ability to curl himself into a ball and use his spikes to defend himself against enemies.
    • Superhuman Strength: Draal's super strength was considerable, he was able to go horn to horn with Gunmar himself (who was at his strongest ever) and briefly outdid him in combat.
    • Superhuman Endurance: As a troll, Draal can endure far more than an average human.
    • Superhuman Durability: Thanks to his stone skin, Draal is able to resist attacks and damages more than an average human. He is able to withstand the savage, brutal attacks of Gunmar, and is even able to shove him down the abyss.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Draal can physically exert himself for long periods of time without tiring or straining. This is incredibly effective when he is rolling around at lightning-fast speeds when he curls into a ball.

Abilities[]

  • Combatant: Draal is a very skilled combatant, proven to be able to go horn-to-horn with near-invincible foes, such as Gunmar.
  • Swordsmanship: Draal has also trained himself with a sword if he one day was chosen to wield the Sword of Daylight, but instead taught Jim how to properly wield it. Due to Draal's training (and his new half-troll form), Jim is able to go blade-to-blade with both Gunmar and Angor Rot at the same time, and even emerges victorious.
  • Selflessness: Even though Draal was severely injured by Gunmar, he wasted not a moment's time to step in between Jim and Angor Rot, when the latter was about to strike Jim with a lethal blow, taking the blow himself instead. Without a moment's thought, he sacrifices his life to save his friend, showcasing his character growth throughout the series.

Weaknesses[]

  • Direct Sunlight: As a troll, Draal is highly vulnerable to natural sunlight as it burns and turns him to stone on contact.
  • Blind Spot: Draal’s weakness is a blind spot behind his back as he cannot look over his shoulders. Jim used this against him once during their duel in "Win Lose or Draal". Gunmar also used this to his advantage in "The Oath" to mercilessly wound him as he was helping Jim.

Equipment[]

  • Battle-Axe: Draal occasionally carries a battle axe when in battle.
  • Parlok Spear: In "Young Atlas", Draal uses a Parlok Spear to help train Jim in single combat.
  • Grit-Shaka (formerly): For unknown reasons, Draal carried a Grit-Shaka around with him, until he gave his Gumm-Gumm totem to Jim to help him face his fear for his kissing scene.
  • Prothetic Arm: After losing his arm whilst removing the Amulet of Daylight out of the Killahead Bridge to prevent Gunmar from escaping, Draal is given a mechanical prosthetic to replace it.

Trivia[]

  • Draal is the fourth character on the side of good to be killed off. The first being his father, Kanjigar the Courageous.
  • Draal is one of a few trolls whose age is actually stated.
  • According to Aaron Waltke on his Twitter page, Draal was originally meant to sacrifice himself in "The Battle of Two Bridges", but Draal's voice actor, Matthew Waterson, convinced the staff to let him survive and lose his right arm instead. His sacrifice was moved to the Part Three episode "The Oath".
    • Also on a Twitter reply, Draal's prothetic arm is based on an old prototype found in the Trollmarket archives; a rusty mechanical relic of ivory and gold, said to have been constructed by Merlin himself a millennium ago for a noble knight of the Round Table, Lancelot.
  • At the end of The Way of the Wizard, it's revealed that after his death, Draal's spirit has joined his father, Kanjigar, and the other Trollhunters in the Void Between Worlds. This is most likely due to him being the son of a previous Trollhunter.
    • This makes Draal the first known troll besides the Trollhunters to reside in the Void Between Worlds after his death.
  • According to The Art of Trollhunters, Draal's appearance is based off of Steve's troll form from the original concept of Steve being a Changeling, like his book counterpart. When the idea of Steve being a changeling was scrapped, the creators decided to use Steve's troll form as a separate character instead.
    • Draal was also originally supposed to be a purplish-magenta troll, unlike his final blue-colored design.
  • When Draal turns to stone, he poses in the exact same pose his father made when died.
