The history of Angor Rot.

Backstory[]

Angor Rot was a warrior troll who lived during Gunmar's War for the Surface Lands. The ongoing war raids between Gunmar and Arthur had been happening for years, and ravaged Angor Rot’s village. At some point during this war, Angor had found a drowned girl and brought her to a sea cave in the Bulgaria's Black Sea that he had heard legends of, one where powerful spirits were said to reside who would sometimes come to the aid of magickind. Here he'd hoped that she might find peace with the spirits who communed there.

While the war between Gunmar and Arthur eventually ended at the Battle of Killahead, it left Angor's home in ruins and defenseless. In 1297 A.D., to gain the strength he needed to defend it from raiders in the war’s aftermath, Angor returned to the sea cave he’d once brought the drowned girl to, hoping that perhaps he could find strength for himself, too. Offering his flesh for power, Angor tried to barter with the spirit of the cave. Little did Angor know that within the cave, Morgana, the very person he had brought there years prior, lie waiting, driven mad with vengeance after being defeated and sealed away in the Heartstone across the world by Merlin and his traitorous apprentices. Though her physical body remained trapped, she had found a way to project her spectral form into this place of power. Embittered and agonized by her loss and imprisonment, Morgana saw Angor’s arrival for what it was— an opportunity. She would use Angor as her pawn, a trial run at stealing another’s power — an ability she might eventually be able to use on Merlin himself while he slumbered. She would take Angor’s soul, transferring it into the Inferna Copula, a ring with which she could control Angor Rot, and use him to erase Merlin’s legacy and kill his Trollhunters.[1][2]

For hundreds of years, Angor Rot murdered dozens of Trollhunters and took their souls in order to fill the void that had been created due to the loss of his own, one of them being Voltar the Voracious. At some point, Angor decides to hunt Merlin himself in Aysa-Thoon. However, the wizard manages to lock him up within the temple as punishment for assassinating his champions under orders of the Pale Lady.[3]

Centuries later, Stricklander found the Inferna Copula and showed it to the Janus Order.

Trollhunters (Part One)[]

Revival[]

Following the destruction of Killahead Bridge and the death of Bular, Stricklander and Otto used the Inferna Copula to release Angor Rot[3] and control him to kill the current Trollhunter, Jim Lake.

Strickler then delivers Angor Rot to Arcadia, where he explains that a human boy has been chosen to become the Trollhunter, much to Angor's surprise. Angor sensed his master's fear of the human boy's power, taunting Stricklander about his inability to defeat Jim himself.

Testing the Trollhunter[]

The assassin tested Jim's abilities by attacking him with a mud Golem at Arcadia Oaks High School.[4] Angor used his eye to spy on Jim and his team in Trollmarket, discovering that they intended to travel to Gatto's Keep and assumed that they would not return. Later, Angor Rot ambushed Jim, Toby, Claire, and human Blinky on a cliff with more Golems made of glass. While Jim's friends battled the Golem, Angor lured Jim into a clearing and trapped him, allowing him to paint his mark on Jim's face and seize control of the Sword of Daylight.[5]

Learning that the Trollhunters are going for the Killstone, Stricklander ordered Angor to pursue the Trollhunters to the land of the Quagawumps in Florida. There, he briefly steals the Sword of Daylight from Jim, kills the Pretend King, Blungo, and stole the Killstone, although he lost his Shadow Staff to Claire as he attempted to escape.[6]

Tired of slaving under Strickler, Angor unleashed a horde of pixies on Arcadia Oaks High and used the chaos to proposed Jim to recover the Inferna Copula so that he can be free of Strickler's control and recover his soul, and in return, he'll sever the connection between his mother and Strickler. Angor warned Jim that if he failed, the Trollhunter's life would be forfeit.

Despite Jim managing to bring the ring to Angor Rot using the Kairosect, the assassin grew angry when the Trollhunter attempted to wear the ring to control him. As the pair chased after the ring, Angor attempted to strike Jim with the Sword of Daylight, only to accidentally shatter his own ring, destroying his own soul in the process. With no hope of regaining his soul, Angor Rot decided to take revenge against Strickler and Jim Lake.

Revenge and Final Assault[]

Angor attacks Strickler in his car, with the latter forced to drive it off a cliff to evade him. After Strickler joined forces with Jim, Angor attacked the pair and Draal at Jim's house, overcoming various booby traps and eventually wounding Stricklander and Barbara. Unable to enter Trollmarket, he attacked Toby and Claire when they go to Arcadia Oaks High to find the Book of Ga-Huel, stealing Claire's Horngazel in the process.

Having the key to enter, Angor Rot attacks Trollmarket with an army of crystal golems. During the battle, he kills several Trolls, including AAARRRGGHH!!! who sacrificed himself to save Toby. Confronting Jim in the Hero's Forge, Angor taunts the Trollhunter about the loved ones he has let die in his place. As he prepares to kill Jim, Toby emerges overhead from one of Claire's portals and Jim forces Angor's Creeper's Sun dagger into his own chest, petrifying him. Toby then smashes the remains with his Warhammer, releasing the souls of the killed Trollhunters.[7]

Trollhunters (Part Two)[]

Angor's remains were later moved to another location in Trollmarket and remained there even after Gunmar's hostile takeover. Of course, Angor did leave a huge impact on Jim and his team, specifically dealing with AAARRRGGHH!!!'s sacrifice even after his revival.

As claimed by Jim, Angor killing AAARRRGGHH!!! was what caused him to question his "Trollhunters" claim, that he's stronger with his friends, yet after watching one of his friends die, he thought that Angor Rot was actually right before: that the reason he's still alive is because his friends risk their own lives to save him. He ventured into the Darklands alone so that he couldn't lose any more of his friends and finish the fight alone. Jim would come to regret his actions.

Later, Claire (who has been corrupted by the Shadow Staff after creating a massive portal to evacuate Trollmarket) retrieved his petrified head and presented it to the Pale Lady, who intended to resurrect Angor as part of her plan to free herself from her prison.[8]

Trollhunters (Part Three)[]

Ressurrection[]

When Gunmar arrives at Morgana's Cave to acquire information on how to bring forth the Eternal Night, Morgana and the possessed Claire present him the head of Angor Rot, who will lead him to the Staff of Avalon.

Later, Gunmar, an enthralled Draal, and a captive AAARRRGGHH!!! arrive at Aysa-Thoon, the Temple of the Pale One and the Dark One. Gunmar presents an Eye for Angor Rot to Morgana's spirit, who revives him and gives him back his soul. She orders Angor to accompany Gunmar to obtain the Staff of Avalon from Merlin's Tomb. Once they arrive, Gunmar's control over Draal wears off and he attempts to attack Gunmar while Angor stands by and watches. When Gunmar shouts something Strickler once said to him while under his control, Angor (in a moment of sympathy) convinces Gunmar to leave Draal alive as he could still be useful.

Battle at Merlin's Tomb[]

In Merlin's Tomb, Angor and Gunmar confront Jim and Draal for the possession of the staff. When Angor tries to kill Jim, Draal steps in and takes the blade for the Trollhunter. Bidding his final farewell, Draal throws himself and Angor over a cliff while Angor leaves Draal's stone body to fall into an abyss. As the cave collapses, Angor begs for Gunmar's aid, but he refuses as he's served his purpose.

Angor survives and confronts Gunmar back at Trollmarket about his abandonment, but he furiously tells him that he exists to serve him and storms out of Morgana's Heartstone chamber. Morgana then speaks to her "champion" that he if he wavers, she will destroy him.

Freeing Morgana[]

After Gunmar kidnaps Stricklander and Barbara Lake, Angor escorts "Barbara" to Strickler, who promises him that Gunmar will not hurt anyone if he uses the Staff of Avalon. However, when she calls him "Strickler", he claims that Barbara calls him "Walter" and recognizes that it was actually Usurna trying to trick him. Angor knew that the evil queen's plan wouldn't work and tried to warn her before hand.

Once Strickler agrees to use the staff for Barbara's life, he activates the relic, but uses the beam to blast a handful of Gumm-Gumms down to give them time to escape. After Gunmar orders their capture, he redirects the beam to Morgana's prison, which leaves a large crack that allows her to break herself free.

After Morgana is released, Angor proceeds to the Hero's Forge to prepare himself to fight the Trollhunter. However, he stops when he hears Gumm-Gumms chanting. He joins the group as Gunmar presents his army to the Pale Lady herself, who proceeds to kill several evil trolls to dust without second thought. Angor pleads her to stop, but she continues massacring most of the Gumm-Gumms, causing a couple earthquakes in the process. Once she was done, Angor was left visibly disturbed that she killed them. She assures that it was "a necessary sacrifice" and with the dust of the dead, she will bring forth the Eternal Night.

The Eternal Night War[]

Before the war begins, Angor privately listens to Gunmar's speech to his army to prepare them for the battle. Morgana joins him, asking if he has lost his faith for his kind's victory. He denies this and vows to take the Trollhunter's life when he took his eye. She then proclaims that he is her champion who will stand by her side when she takes over the world. Angor wonders about Gunmar, whom she merely saw as a pawn she will dispose of once his conquest was finished. Angor, however, begins to question his mistress, wondering if she, indeed, saw him as a champion.

With everything all set, Morgana proceeds to begin the Eternal Night, blocking out the sunlight that allows the Gumm-Gumms to invade Arcadia, thus beginning the war.

Angor remains at the Heartstone with Morgana, who has siphoned the Staff of Avalon's magic for herself. Once Merlin and AAARRRGGHH!!! infiltrate Trollmarket, Angor ambushes the duo easily. Morgana knocks out the fallen Gumm-Gumm with her magic before combating her former master. When Morgana reveals to Merlin that she has taken his magic, she brutalizes him. While she handles the wizard, she orders Angor to go to the surface and finish the Trollhunter.

The resurrected assassin then confronts the Trollhunter, who has transformed himself into a half-troll to even the odds between him and Gunmar. Angor and Gunmar attack Jim, who effortlessly handles them thanks to his newfound troll abilities. Just as the assassin pins Jim down, he reminds Angor of who he once was: a hero to trollkind, and asks him what his excuse was now that he had his soul back.

This revelation makes Angor see the error of his ways and he remembers why he went to Morgana in the first place, let alone the one true person who was responsible for stealing his soul and causing him so much pain for centuries.

The former assassin confronts the Pale Lady, who was seconds away from killing Jim and his friends. Pleased to see her "champion", she offers the final blow on Jim to him. Taking this opportunity, he strikes his former mistress instead, much to the Trollhunters' shock. He exclaims that he is no one's pawn. Morgana demands to know what Jim has told him before she waved him aside. Angor replied that the boy has reminded him who he truly fights for, why he even bargained with her in the first place, only for her to backstab him just for her own personal vendetta against Merlin.

The two engage in a brief, but tense battle as Angor manages to grab a hold of her. He takes Jim's stab as he tries to kill the witch, only to realize that she couldn't be killed. Angor then urges Claire to use the Shadow Staff to trap Morgana in the Shadow Realm. Angor tries to help Claire, but Morgana blows him up into pieces, much to Toby's horror, but Claire manages to push the witch into the Shadow Realm and escape by ordering Toby to destroy the Shadow Staff.

Wizards[]

Discovering Morgana[]

Sailing a small boat across the Black Sea, Angor Rot discovers the body of Morgana drifting through the current. He fishes her out of the water and into his boat, expressing pity over her death. He drops her off at a nearby shore (her soon-to-be cave) and tells her he hopes the spirits guide her to the afterlife as he takes his hood off to reveal himself. It is unknown if he knowingly brought Morgana to the Arcane Order.
