Master Jim, destiny is a gift. Never forget that fear is but the precursor to valor, and to strive and triumph in the face of fear is what it means to be a hero. After everything we've been through... are you ready?
―Blinky to Jim

Blinkous "Blinky" Galadrigal is the tetartagonist of the Tales of Arcadia franchise, serving as the tetartagonist of Trollhunters and Rise of the Titans, a minor character of 3Below, and a major character of Wizards.

He is the current elder of Heartstone Trollmarket, protégé/successor of Vendel, the mentor of Jim Lake Jr., best friends with AAARRRGGHH!!!, and the younger brother of Dictatious Galadrigal.

Official Biography[]

"Grandiose in speech and with never-ending enthusiasm, Blinky is the chief Troll advisor to Jim and his friends. He views himself as a mastermind and diligent trainer, though the rest of Trollkind considers him as a crackpot for embracing Jim as the first ever human Trollhunter. Blinky sees potential in Jim even when almost no one else does, and he will do anything to help him succeed."

Physical Description[]

For Blinky, the main challenge was to make him appealing despite the amount of eyes. In order to make them fit in his face, he needs special proportions that are not always what we are used to seeing, which was difficult, but at the same time, it is the attribute that makes him unique. He needed to feel wise and worldly, but also approachable and fun. Blinky was at first one of those characters that we thought would be too weird and wacky but he turned out to be one of the most successful. The challenge was to make him appealing and relatable despite his many limbs and eyes. His face was very challenging as we are used to anchoring all the facial features around the eyes, but in this case there are six of them, so it's a bit difficult for readability purposes. That makes the face very long and it's difficult to make it look 'real'. In the end we managed to create something that looks volumetrically plausible and appealing.
―The Team at Headless Animation Studio[src]

Blinky is a greenish-blue Troll with four arms, blue hair, and a set of short horns on the back of his head. He has three brown eyes on either side of his long orange nose, and patterns on his chin, arms, and chest. In Wizards, after he was ambushed by the Green Knight in New Jersey, Blinky was badly injured with various bruises/scratches all over him, a few black eyes, and he even had to wear a sling for his broken left upper arm. In Rise of the Titans, his injuries have healed, yet his stone skin is covered in visible scars.

He wears brown shorts with suspenders and satchels.

After an in-depth exploration of Gatto's belly, Blinky is accidentally transformed into a human, Mr. Blink-heh! Masquerading as Jim's guidance counselor, Blinky is able to venture into the sunlight and fulfill his life-long dream—learning to drive an automobile!
The Art of Trollhunters

When Blinky was temporarily turned into a human after the events of "Roaming Fees May Apply" (from "Blinky's Day Out" up until "It's About Time"), he had brown balding hair, an equally large nose, hair on his forearms, and was still the same shape as his native troll form.

He wore a leather jacket, a light blue buttoned sweater, brown jeans, and brown work shoes.

Personality[]

Since the early development of the script, Blinky was considered a beloved character. Because Guillermo created the character with Kelsey Grammer in mind, he needed to reflect the warmth, gravitas, and intelligence of his value. Blinky is the father figure, the voice of wisdom, empathy, and safety. He had to convey all of those characteristics while still being able to see him as part of the troll world. His six eyes portray his wisdom and also his ability to evaluate any situation with intelligence and reason. He truly can see a problem from all sides—and therefore is the perfect mentor for Jim as he struggles with the weight of responsibility thrust upon him.
―Christina Steinberg, Executive Producer[src]

Blinky is a scholarly troll, well versed in troll lore, history, and magic, and can be quite eccentric. He strives to be a good mentor and friend and has a keen interest in learning something new. He has a warm and strong regard to those he cares for and does all he can to aid them, and this is especially so when he became a mentor to Jim Lake Jr., the first human to ever wear the mantle and responsibility of the Trollhunter.

He can come off occasionally as pompous due to his intellectual mindset, and can sometimes make absent-minded mistakes, but always means well. During his time as a human, Blinky was easily amazed by the "wonders" of the human world during the day, though his constant curiosity often made him look weird. He even admits that he's come to better understand humans during his time as a human himself, like love.

Otherwise, Blinky is wiser than he seems, able to inspire Jim not only to embrace his new role as the Trollhunter but to use that same inspiration to land the part of Romeo in his school play. He is evidently more open-minded than most trolls as he believed that Jim (a human) could (and did) become a worthy Trollhunter, despite the many twists and turns their journey together took.

In the past, however, unlike his more strategic and respectful present day self, he was arrogant, cowardly, and not nearly as wise and fatherly as he is today, as he treated "outsiders" as troublemakers and outcasts. He even scoffed when Jim mentions that the trolls have to protect the humans from their brewing conflict, and ignorantly doubted the day would come when he and his people would have to choose sides instead of hiding, somewhat similar to Dictatious's behavior in the present.

Powers & Abilities[]

Powers[]

  • Troll Physiology: Unlike most trolls, Blinky himself states that he’s not as strong nor aggressive as his kind, but is still stronger than an average human.
    • Enhanced Strength: As shown in "Homecoming", Blinky is strong enough to knock Dictatious out cold with a few whacks to the head. However, his strength clearly does not surpass AAARRRGGHH!!! or Draal.
    • Superhuman Endurance: As a troll, Blinky can endure more than an average human.
      • Superhuman Durability: Thanks to his stone skin, Blinky is durable enough to shrug off Morgana's magical surprise wave, as well as many of Dictatious's uppercuts.
      • Superhuman Stamina: Blinky can physically exert himself for long periods of time without tiring. He is able to run away from enemies without even slowing down.
    • Enhanced Speed: Blinky is fast enough to outrun a horde of goblins, as well as Bular.
    • Additional Limbs: Blinky has more eyes and arms than other trolls.
      • Extra Arms: He has four arms, which allow him to multitask and provide additional strength.
      • Extra Eyes: He has six eyes which help him read faster and study his surroundings easier.
    • Longevity: As a troll, Blinky is capable of living for hundreds of years, but he is still vulnerable to death and can fall in battle.

Abilities[]

  • Intelligence: While AAARRRGGHH!!! relies on brute strength, Blinky's greatest strength is his intelligence and knowledges, as well as his quick-wits. Blinky is one of the smartest trolls in Trollmarket, rivaling Vendel and his brother Dictatious, and even owns his own library organized with books created by himself and Dictatious. He shares this trait with his brother, but he clearly has a higher sense of morality than he does. He is highly knowledgable about history, often teaching Jim and his friends the purposes and rules of the troll world and many magical artifacts. Much like Jim, Blinky is fairly good at improvising and quick-thinking, like how he managed to escape his brother's captivity by setting himself free and blinding Dictatious.
    • Tactician: According to Jim, Blinky is one of the smartest strategists he knows. In the past, however, he was not as well-prepared as he is today.
  • Manipulation: Like his brother, Blinky can use his intellect to manipulate people, though in a lesser extent. In Angor Reborn, Blinky managed to trick Usurna into revealing how she truly feels about her people, which would eventually cause them to see the error of their ways.
  • Leadership: After the death of Vendel, Blinky has taken over his role as the new leader of Trollmarket. However, he admits that he's struggling a lot with this responsibility as he has trouble calming down clashing trolls.
    • Skillful Orator: Blinky is a naturally strong speaker, even being able to inspire Jim to accept his position as the new Trollhunter and win the hearts of his troll brethren.
  • Craftsmanship: Blinky has some knowledge of crafting/upgrading weapons. In "Escape from the Darklands", after noticing Toby's difficulty in wielding his Warhammer, he repurposed it to help him keep better stability of the curse trapped inside and even make it fun-sized.
  • Pianist: As shown in "Recipe for Disaster", Blinky is a skilled piano player as he was able to play a perfect ragtime music on Strickler's piano.

Weaknesses[]

  • Direct Sunlight: Blinky is naturally vulnerable to sunlight, as all trolls are since they burn and turn them to stone. He did briefly lose this weakness when he was temporarily transformed into a human.
  • Mortality (formerly): While briefly transformed into a human, Blinky had a human's vulnerability to sickness, injury, fatigue, and death. However, he regains his longevity when the spell finally wore off.
  • Lack of Combat Skills: As stated by Blinky himself, he lacks skills necessary for combat.
  • Cowardice: As revealed in Wizards, Blinky (along with his brother) were prone to lack of bravery they initially possessed around Trollhunters. They were quick to kick Jim and Callista out because they feared that "outsiders" would cause trouble, and even run away from the mere appearance of the Gumm-Gumm AAARRRGGHH!!!, who demands the trolls to fight with Gunmar or die. It is through Dictatious that helps Blinky gain some confidence against the Gumm-Gumms, though he was still reluctant to fight back.

Equipment[]

  • Flare Crystal (briefly): Before entering the Darklands, Kanjigar entrusted Blinky a flare crystal as its "blinding light will save his life". Although he briefly lost it, he reclaims it while he was held captive by Dictatious. Blinky uses the crystal to permanently blind all six of Dictatious's eyes. After which, he throws the crystal aside and leaves it behind.
  • Dwärkstones: Despite lacking in strength and combat abilities, Blinky uses explosive Dwärkstones as his weapons. When shaken, they glow green until they explode. During the Eternal Night War, he uses these stones against Morgana to knock her out of the air, even hitting her with great aim.
  • Horngazel: Blinky uses a Horngazel to enter and exit Trollmarket, as well as any other hidden chambers, like the Gyre Station. He also uses it to lock up entrance ways and used it once to magically tighten the shackles holding down Claire (who was possessed by Morgana).
  • Vendel's Staff: After Vendel's death, Blinky now occasionally carries around his staff, showing his status as the new elder of Heartstone Trollmarket.
  • Broom: Blinky is seen carrying a broom as a weapon.
  • Parlok Spear (formerly): While living in the Old World, Blinky used to wield a parlok spear like his brother. In "Homecoming", after blinding Dictatious in the Darklands, he used his own spear to knock him out cold before releasing AAARRRGGHH!!! from his chains.

Trivia[]

  • In the 2015 book, Blinky has eight eyes instead of six, and has many tentacles instead of four arms. He is also blinded from studying books almost non-stop.
  • Blinky is confirmed to be one of Guillermo Del Toro's favorite characters in the franchise.
  • Blinky’s interest in driving may have been taken from the original book character, Jack Sturges (Jim Sturges Jr.'s uncle), though for different reasons. Blinky wanted to drive out of curiosity and Jack wanted to drive since he spent years stuck as a thirteen-year-old and never got to drive. Both are horrible at it.
  • In the series, he exclaims the words, "Great Gronka Morka". The book Age of the Amulet reveals that this is the name of a great Troll hero who rescued the Trolls imprisoned by Tellad-Urr. When Blinky was in the past the Trolls he rescued heard him say it and called him Great Gronka Morka. Blinky tried to correct them by saying that even though Gronka Morka is the same type of Troll as him, but stopped when he realized that HE is the Troll hero, Gronka Morka.
  • Blinky is one of three witnesses to Kanjigar's final battle and death in Becoming: Part 1; he watched with AAARRRGGHH!!!, and unknowingly Eli Pepperjack, the final fight between Bular and Kanjigar in the opening scene as well as Kanjigar's heroic sacrifice and demise.
  • He resembles Mandu from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.
